There are three types of bookable one-to-one appointments available: Learning Advisers (study, assignment and writing guidance); Royal Literary Fund Fellows (writing guidance); Maths and Statistics advice. (see end of page).

Study advice with Learning Advisers

We offer online and face-to-face appointments to support you with a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Academic writing e.g. research, critical analysis, argument, academic language, structure, referencing
  • Organisation and time management
  • Reading and note-taking techniques
  • Avoiding plagiarism and referencing
  • Presentation skills (verbal and visual)
  • Revision and exams techniques
  • ...and much more

Writing advice (Royal Literary Fund Fellows)

RLF Writing Fellows are professional writers employed by the Royal Literary Fund to offer confidential, independent advice on written assignments to all University of Kent students. They can help with:  

  • Unpacking the question/topic
  • Confidence building in writing
  • Planning and structuring
  • Use of language and clarity
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Editing your own work

Lucy is an award-winning children’s author. Her books capture elements of classic children’s literature in a style that is engaging and accessible for today’s younger readers. Often inspired by folklore, fairy tales and mythology, Lucy combines British landscapes and historical settings with touches of fantasy, creating utterly convincing worlds in which anything might happen.

Among Lucy's published works are:

Lucy lives in the heart of the Kent countryside with her husband and son.

Leo Zeilig (Canterbury) - Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Leo is a celebrated writer, historian, and prize-winning novelist. His non-fiction examines the remarkable lives, scholarship and political movements of the Global South, while his novels explore how generations of leftwing activists have been shaped by their involvement in politics.

Among those whom Leo has written about are: Patrice Lumumba, Frantz Fanon, Walter Rodney, Thomas Sankara and Ruth First.

As an editor, Leo Zeilig has worked for many years on the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE), a radical quarterly founded by anti-apartheid activists in 1974.

 Leo lives with his partner in London and Folkestone.

The Skills for Academic Success team runs clinics offering comprehensive advice and guidance on maths, financial maths and statistics:

  • Wednesdays from 13:00 to 17:00
  • Online appointments
  • During Autumn and Spring Terms, with limited service during the Summer Term
